More About Mali

Mali is a landlocked country, located in the heart of West Africa.

Covering an area of approximately 1.24 million square kilometres, Mali encompasses a vast range of terrains and people, bordered by Algeria and Mauritania to the North, Niger to the east, Senegal to the West and Ivory Coast, Guinea and Burkina Faso along the country’s southern perimeter.

The country’s name is derived from the famous Mali empire which spanned from present-day Senegal down to as far as modern day northern Ghana. The name Mali, meaning "the place where the king lives", is therefore an apt ode to the country's rich history and its key role in trans-Saharan trade as well being at the forefront of spreading education across the region, notably demonstrated by the famed city of Timbuktu.
